Contemporary civilization often privileges the third layer — symbols and abstractions — while losing contact with the grounding of the first two. When money, status, or ideology dominate attention, societies can behave as if their own constructions are the only reality. This disconnect breeds instability: policy divorced from physical limits, markets divorced from ecological reality, meaning detached from embodied wellbeing.

Technology, especially AI, intensifies this dynamic. AI systems are artifacts of our models (third layer) built to manipulate data (second layer) and trained on human signals (third); they can accelerate both insight and illusion. The question is not whether we will build intelligent systems, but whether we build systems that respect the multilevel nature of reality.
